Mysterious Messages

Carved in stone is an ancient message from those who lived here long ago. This petroglyph, located in the region, has sat for many generations. It is unlike many of the other petroglyphs found in Ontario. Its etched images suggest a journey across the landscape, and
is our inspiration for this exhibition. What can you see in the markings on this rock? What do you think they might mean? We don’t know who made these markings, nor do we know how old they are, although it is believed they extend back thousands of years. Think of these designs as you examine the rest of the exhibition.

Worldwide, the iconography of ancient rock art continues to puzzle and intrigue researchers and casual viewers alike. While some of the symbolism can be traced to themes widespread in shamanism—the most ancient and fundamental of human spiritual ideology and practice— other examples, such as the Misko-Aki petroglyph, are as unique as the people who left them.
